Minimum curriculum requirements for Magister programmes
in ARCHAEOLOGY
- GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Magister programmes in Archaeology last 5 years (10 semesters). The total course load is ca. 2000 hours, or ca. 2700 hours for programmes comprising two specialist options, including 900 hours covered by the minimum curriculum requirements.
- PROFILE OF THE GRADUATE
The graduate possesses a thorough and comprehensive knowledge in the specialist option areas distinguished within archaeology and in its auxiliary sciences as well as a general knowledge of humanities. He/She is qualified to work in scientific, museum and conservation establishments.

PRACTICAL PLACEMENT
The minimum duration of a practical placement, undertaken in the field and/or museums as appropriate for a given specialist option, is 6 weeks.
(The minimum duration for the specialist option “General Archaeology” is 16 weeks).

More extensive knowledge of history, philosophy, cultural anthropology, logic, etc., depending on the student’s interests and the specialist option he/she has chosen.
- MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Proficiency in one modern language: writing and speaking skills.
- ANCIENT FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Proficiency in one ancient language, depending on the specialist option chosen by the student.
- PHYSICAL EDUCATION or ANOTHER SPORTS AND RECREATION COURSE
Participation in physical education activities: general, corrective, rehabilitative, recreational, tourist or sports activities (to be chosen by the student or in accordance with medical recommendations).

- ARCHAEOLOGY: INTRODUCTORY COURSES
The introductory courses in archaeology include: introductory information about archaeology, its history, its position in the humanities, research methods and methodology, archaeological techniques, presentation of basic auxiliary sciences.
- OVERVIEW OF MAIN AREAS OF ARCHAEOLOGY
The overview of main areas of archaeology comprises the presentation of basic topics in archaeology: pre-historic archaeology, proto-historic archaeology, archaeology of the Middle Ages and modern times, and archaeology of the Mediterranean, including Greece, Rome, Egypt and Middle East.
- MAJOR COURSES
- ARCHAEOLOGY OF REGIONS AND PERIODS
A block of courses comprising lectures (at least 60 hours), classes (at least 60 hours) and tutorials or seminars which are designed to reinforce and provide more profound knowledge concerning archaeology of individual epochs and cultural zones. This block is devoted to a detailed discussion of key issues in the archaeology of the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Middle Ages and modern times, ancient European and non-European civilisations, subaqueous archaeology and archaeological conservation, depending on the areas of research carried out in individual university units. This course introduces the key issues related to research, methodology and interpretation as well as the latest scientific achievements. Students may choose core and complementary subjects, depending on the topics of their magister theses and the chosen specialist option.
