doktor (dr)

First academic degree granted to holders of the title of magister or its equivalent. To achieve this, one is required to prepare, write and defend in a public viva voce examination a doctoral dissertation. Their holders can also initiate procedures for habilitation.

doktor habilitowany
(dr hab.)

Second academic degree granted to holders of the degree of doktor in all disciplines. To achieve this, one is required to produce a dissertation (rozprawa habilitacyjna) and pass successfully the kolokwium habilitacyjne (special kind of examination). The degree is granted subject to the approval by Centralna Komisja ds. Tytułu Naukowego i Stopni Naukowych (Central Commission for Academic Title and Degrees). Faculty councils which are entitled to confer the doktor habilitowany degree can also initiate procedures for conferring the academic title of profesor in a specified area.

dyplom ukończenia studiów wyższych

Diploma (of higher education), a formal document issued upon successful completion of studies, confirming the professional title (licencjat, inżynier, magister, lekarz, etc.). The specimens of diploma are defined and approved by the Ministry of National Education.

Student record book, a personal document containing information concerning the courses taken by the student (a list of lectures, classes, examination marks, credits); this document is the basis for student admission to the next semester, year of study.

inżynier (inż.)

First professional title, at the bachelor level, in technical higher education (in agriculture - except for veterinary and some courses in economics) granted after 3,5-4 years of study. Submission and defending of a thesis is required. Holders of this title may continue education to obtain a magister inżynier diploma.

Student course record, an extract from a student record book listing all information concerning a study programme followed.

kwalifikacje drugiego stopnia

Second degree qualifications. An equivalent of the academic degree of doktor habilitowany granted in artistic disciplines.

kwalifikacje pierwszego stopnia

First degree qualifications. An equivalent of the academic degree of doktor granted in artistic disciplines.

lekarz (lek.)

Physician, a professional title in medicine (granted to graduates of academies of medicine), equivalent of magister, granted after 6 years of education. Submission of a thesis is not required. Their holders may continue academic career for the degree of doktor.

lekarz stomatolog
(lek. stom.)

Dentist, a professional title in dentistry (granted to graduates of departments of dentistry in academies of medicine), equivalent of magister, granted after 5-6 years of education. Submission of a thesis is not required. Their holders may continue academic career for the degree of doktor.

lekarz weterynarii
(lek. wet.)

Veterinary surgeon, a professional title in veterinary medicine (granted to graduates of academies of agriculture, veterinary medicine departments), equivalent of magister, granted after 5-5,5 years of education. Their holders may continue academic career for the degree of doktor.

licencjat (lic.)

First professional title, at the bachelor level, in non-technical higher education (humanities, science, social sciences, economics, physical education, tourism and medical sciences with the exception of medicine and dentistry) granted after 3-3,5 years of study. Submission of a thesis is required. Their holders may continue study for magister/magister edukacji/ magister sztuki.

magister (mgr)

Second professional title of academic education (humanities, science, social sciences, economics, theological sciences, physical education and tourism, medical sciences except for medicine and dentistry), may be conferred upon successful completion of 5 years uniform magister studies or after two years of complementary studies, for holders of first professional title. Submission of a thesis is required. Their holders may continue academic career for obtaining the doktor degree.

magister edukacji
(mgr ed.)

Equivalent of magister title granted after 5 years of pedagogic higher education (teacher training schools and academies). Their holders may obtain the degree of doktor if they continue academic career.

magister inżynier
(mgr inż.)

Professional title of technical higher education, (also agricultural, except for veterinary), equivalent of magister, granted after 5-6 years of study. Submission of a thesis/diploma work is required. Diploma gives right to enter doctoral studies and obtaining the doktor degree.

magister inżynier architekt
(mgr inż. arch.)

Professional title in technical architecture higher education. Submission of a diploma work is required. Title is equivalent to magister and gives right to enter doctoral studies and obtain the degree of doktor.

magister sztuki

Equivalent of magister title granted after 4-6 years of study in artistic higher education institutions. Their holders may prepare for the degree of doktor or for the kwalifikacje pierwszego stopnia (first degree qualifications).

/ praca dyplomowa

Magister thesis, a research paper written at the end of magister studies (higher vocational studies), demonstrating the students ability to apply research methods to put theoretical knowledge into practise.

profesor (prof.)

Academic title conferred by the President of the Republic of Poland to holders of the degree of doktor habilitowany for their significant achievements in research and education.

rozprawa doktorska

Doctoral dissertation, a paper presenting the author’s original solution to an academic problem, presenting his/her general theoretical knowledge in a particular field of science and the ability to carry out independent research.

rozprawa habilitacyjna

Habilitation dissertation, a piece of scholarly work which is the author’s substantial contribution to the development of a particular discipline of science; it may also be an original, outstanding type of engineering project.

sesja egzaminacyjna

Exam session, winter and summer obligatory examinations after completion of the semester education with positive results. Students have to pass examination as prescribed by law and faculty rules.

stopień naukowy

Academic degree; two degrees (first doktor and subsequently doktor habilitowany); may be obtained by magister (or equivalent) title holders continuing academic career.

studia jednolite magisterskie

Uniform master level courses lasting about 5 years which lead to the title of magister or an equivalent diploma.

studia magisterskie uzupełniające

Complementary master level courses for holders of licencjat or inżynier diploma, lasting about 2 years.

studia podyplomowe

Form of studies organised for holders of higher education diplomas which are taken to update or develop professional or academic knowledge.

studia zawodowe

Courses of higher vocational education, lasting 3-4 years, which lead to the professional title of licencjat or inżynier.

świadectwo dojrzałości / świadectwo maturalne

Formal matriculation certificate granted after completing 4-5 years of secondary education and passing the matriculation examination (state examination). General entry pre-requisite for admission to higher education. The specimen for świadectwo dojrzałości is defined and approved by Ministry of National Education.

tytuł zawodowy

Professional title (e.g. magister, magister inżynier, licencjat, lekarz) awarded to graduates of higher education subject to the fulfilment of various requirements concerning admission, duration of study, examination contents, practical training, progression from one academic year to another, successful defence of the thesis and other requirements as established by law.
